Melanotaenia boesemani belongs to the family Melanotaeniidae of the Rainbow fishes. It is native to New Guinea, Indonesia. It was discovered in 1954 - 1955 by the Dutchman Boeseman.
It is a peaceful, very active copepod fish. These fish are best suited to Dutch-style aquariums due to the contrast of their colours with the green of the plants.
Most of the time they swim in the open areas of the aquarium, usually in the middle and upper zone. Females are smaller than males and are less brightly coloured. The length of males can reach 10-11 cm while females can reach 8-9 cm.The temperature should be kept at a relatively high level, 27 - 30 oC.
