It is one of the fish that can be found in almost every social aquarium. One of the most familiar to aquarium keepers, it impresses with its very distinctive shape and variety of colours, many of which come from crossbreeding. These crossbreeds that were and still are made, have had the consequence of losing, in addition to their classic colors, the natural way of caring for the eggs and later the young. It is common for the parents to eat the eggs after each laying and they have to be removed from the tank and we have to take care of the young if we want some of them to survive

They live in deep stagnant or slow-flowing parts of the Amazon. They are peaceful fish that live in schools, and only during the mating season do they create areas to protect them. It is difficult to distinguish males from females, which is only easily done during the mating season.

They are easy to live with other peaceful fish in an aquarium that should be at least 50 cm high, but do not put them with small fish like Paracheirodon herbertaxelrodi, because they perceive them as food when they are adults. They need enough free space to swim, but also areas with lots of plants with large leaves, such as Vallisneria. We can also put roots in our aquarium and in combination with not too bright lighting, mating is possible if we have fish of both genera and a pair is formed.

The correct temperature for these fish is 24 - 28 C°, and for breeding 26 - 29 C°. The pH from 5.5 - 7.5, and for breeding no more than 6.5, and hardness around 5° dGH. They are not picky about their food, but they tend to eat more than they need, so you need to control the amount you feed them.
